At Inspired Med Spa we have two types of chemical peels: glycolic or salicylic acid. They each have their benefits and areas of focus to improve the texture and tone of your skin and remove the topmost layer of the epidermis, revealing new, youthful skin beneath. But what’s the difference between the two kinds of acid?
Glycolic acid is created from the alpha hydroxy acid group that naturally occurs in citrus fruits, apples, grapes, and sugar cane. This chemical peel penetrates the outer layer of skin cells, known as the epidermis, and breaks the bonds of dull, dead skin cells to reveal the new living skin tissue beneath, called the dermis. Glycolic acid also stimulates the production of collagen, further accelerating the renewal of new skin cells. Collagen fills in fine lines and wrinkles, lightens dark spots, and evens out your complexion. The new skin is smoother, softer, and retains a healthy glow.
Salicylic acid more effectively treats acne and the scars that result from it. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid derived from sweet bark trees and willow bark. In addition, salicylic acid is also derived from a form of aspirin that acts as an anti-inflammatory and soothes the skin. Ideal for treating acne scarring, salicylic acid discourages further breakouts by being fat-soluble and cutting through sebum, the oil, and bacteria that clog pores and cause acne. This chemical peel peels away layers of acne scars, blackheads, whiteheads, and other blemishes congesting the pores. It sheds away the dirty, discolored epidermis, revealing a smooth, evenly textured dermis beneath. Chemical peels do not react well with all skin types, as for some darker tones, the acid content of the peel can bleach the skin’s pigmentation away. The best place to start to learn if you’re a candidate for a chemical peel is a consultation with the Inspired Med Spa aestheticians.
Once you’ve determined the peel type and strength for you, your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepped for the acid solution. Then the chemical peel’s active ingredients are applied and remain on your skin for the required exposure time. Once your time is up, the acid is neutralized and your skin is soothed with cool compresses. You’ll receive thorough aftercare instructions so you know exactly how to treat your skin gently for maximum results and an easier recovery.
The depth of your chemical peel determines the length of downtime you experience. Some of the milder peels require only a day or two of social downtime, while deeper peels may need as long as 14 days of full recuperation and healing.
