Acne & Scarring

Dealing With the Effects of Acne & Scarring

Millions of people all across the globe deal with acne on a regular basis. It can be caused by a variety of things, but there is one constant when it comes to going through a breakout: It can be incredibly annoying and frustrating, especially if you try to take good care of your skin.

But, what happens after a breakout can be even more frustrating. Many people with severe acne also experience scarring, which can lead to lasting marks on the face.

The good news? Acne scar treatments are available and it can help to restore the beauty of your skin.

What are Acne Scars?

There are different types of acne scars that can get left behind after years of breakouts. They tend to fall into two different categories: Depressed scars and raised scars

Depressed (or atrophic) acne scars are the most common on the face and they sit just below the surface of the skin that surrounds them, making them look like pockmarks.

If you used to have a lot of back acne, you might have more raised (hypertrophic) scarring, in which the scars actually protrude above the skin due to too much collagen formation during the healing process.

Both types of acne scars can be unsightly. But, scar treatment is possible for both.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Acne & Scarring?

While at-home treatments like sunscreen, lactic acids, and retinoids can sometimes help to reduce the appearance of scars, they usually don’t get rid of the scars completely. That’s especially true if you went through years of breakouts that have caused deep scarring.

The most common in-office scar treatments include

  • Microdermabrasion – This process exfoliates the top layer of your skin, allowing it to shed away, which causes skin resurfacing. The skin underneath won’t have such a heavy appearance of scarring.
  • Chemical Peels – A chemical peel uses a specialized acid to safely and effectively remove the top layer of your skin. If you have very deep acne scars, this is a great option.
  • Skin Resurfacing – Using a laser to resurface your skin works similarly to dermabrasion, shedding away the top layer to reveal healthy skin underneath.
  • Acne Facials – Acne facials help to remove buildup from the pores, extracting oil and dirt that could be clogging them and contributing to your breakouts.
  • Secret RF Microneedling – Using radio frequencies, this process both stimulates and remodels collagen in your skin, which can help to reduce the appearance of scars and help you to look younger.

What Results Will I See?

The results you will see depends on the type of acne scarring you have, and how prominent those scars are. For instance, if you dealt with acne outbreaks for years and you have very deep scars, it’s unlikely that they will go away completely.

But, with any of the scar treatment options listed above, you can greatly minimize the appearance of those scars, and completely change the look of your complexion. For most people, it makes a big difference.

Is There Any Downtime?

The downtime for scar treatment depends on the type of procedure you choose. For the most part, though, any of the procedures listed here will allow you to return to your normal, everyday routine. Some might cause slight redness and irritation, and your skin may feel sensitive for a few days. But, they shouldn’t hinder you from going about your business.
